Shri Tripura Sundari Temple Shakti Peetha

Shri Tripura Sundari Temple Shakti Peetha

Shri Tripura Sundari Shaktipeeth is among the 51 revered Shakti Peethas where the right foot of Goddess Sati is believed to have fallen. The temple is situated in Udaipur, Tripura — a beautiful and serene town often referred to as the City of Temples. The presiding deity here is Maa Tripura Sundari, also known as Soroshi in local tradition. Lord Shiva is worshipped here as Tripuresh.

“ॐ ऐं ह्रीं क्लीं चामुण्डायै विच्चे॥
Om Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundayai Vichche
(For divine protection and Shakti awakening)

― Shri Bahula Devi Temple

This sacred temple is not only a part of Shaktipeeth tradition but is also one of the 51 Maha Shaktipeethas mentioned in the Tantric texts.

History & Mythological Significance

The origin of this temple is linked with the Daksha Yagna legend, where Goddess Sati immolated herself in protest of her father Daksha’s insult to Lord Shiva. In his sorrow, Lord Shiva carried her body, and Vishnu cut it into pieces using his Sudarshan Chakra. The right foot of Sati is said to have fallen at this site.
According to local legends, the Maharaja of Tripura, Dhanya Manikya, built this temple in 1501 AD after receiving a divine dream where Goddess Tripura Sundari instructed him to establish her idol on the hillock. Since then, the temple has remained a vibrant spiritual hub.

Spiritual Importance

Maa Tripura Sundari is considered one of the ten Mahavidyas and the Supreme Goddess in Sri Vidya Tantra tradition. Worshipping her brings beauty, prosperity, and moksha (liberation). She represents the highest form of divine feminine — one who governs the three worlds (Tripura): the gross (Bhuloka), subtle (Antarloka), and causal (Sookshmaloka) realms.
Beliefs:
Devotees believe that all wishes made with pure heart are fulfilled here.
She is also considered the Kula Devi (family deity) by many Bengali and Tripuri families.
Powerful for Tantric sadhana, especially during Navratri and Diwali.

Architecture of the Temple

The architecture of the temple is a unique blend of Bengali Ek-ratna (single spire) style and Tripuri tribal craftsmanship. The temple structure is built in the shape of a square edifice with a pyramidal dome above the sanctum.

Architectural Features:

The temple faces west, which is unique and spiritually symbolic.

Red sandstone and white dome, representing both Shakti and purity.

A sacred pond called Kalyan Sagar lies just beside the temple, filled with large tortoises and fishes which are considered sacred.

The main idol is of Goddess Soroshi (Tripura Sundari), carved from black stone and standing about 5 feet tall.
